You Can't Master Internet Marketing Until You Become a Good Communicator

By Hannah S. Thompson

When you are a novice to Internet marketing, the field can seem very intimidating, particularly if you don't have any knowledge of the field. As you go through forums and articles, you'll find all sorts of lists about what you have to do to be the next big thing. All of these lists are going to look like contradict each other. One list will state "patience" is the key to succeeding in the IM field. Another is going to say that you have to have lots of business savvy. Still, others will state that creativity is the secret to wild and fantastic success. And, of course, you can't forget about all of the people saying that all you have to do is purchase their software if you desire to be the next big name in IM!

Know this: All of these things matter (well, perhaps not the software, but the other things). You have to have patience, business savvy and creativity if you desire to succeed. But none of those things count if you are not able to clearly communicate all of them to the people you want to purchase from you.

There is more to effective communication than creating an amazing sales page. A good copywriter can handle that part of your project. A beautiful website and extensive FAQ are not what you need for good communication. An experienced web site designer and writer can do those things for you. Being effective in communication calls for learning to handle interpersonal communication as well as your copy and site. So what is it that you need to do?

1. Don't let an e-mail sit unanswered for more than 24 hours. This is no joke. You don't need to write a long answer for every last mail. All you have to do is compose a brief note that says something like "I read your e-mail and will be sending you a detailed answer shortly." When you do this, include a a snippet of the sender's e-mail. This helps the the other person to separate your email from the auto responders that everybody else uses.

2. Answer your phone. Try not to calls. When your telephone is ringing, pick it up before it rings three times. Do this even if you genuinely don't wish to talk to the person making the call. You'd be glad to learn that there is an exemption to this particular rule. You don't need to answer your telephone all day. What you should do is specify clear business hours during which you can talk on the phone. Publish these hours on your site and in your voice mail message also. And, naturally, return phone calls if people were not able to reach you the first time.

3. Make sure that the people you send messages and emails to actually have received those messages and emails. This indicates to them that you care about your correspondence with them. It will help your clients and purchasers trust you further if you actually take the time to ask if they have any questions about your messages so that they can ask you to clear up anything they need clarified.
